Bangkok Rush is a track in Mario Kart Tour that was the premier city course in the Bangkok Tour. The track is based on the city of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. It received its second and third variant a few months later as part of the 2023 Winter Tour.

Bangkok Rush makes a retro appearance in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as part of Wave 4 of the Booster Course Pass DLC, as the first track in the Boomerang Cup.

Layout[]

Mario Kart Tour[]

Bangkok Rush 1[]

The first layout starts at the Grand Palace beside a building with two elephant statues, facing the Wat Arun, and is more concentrated to the south half of the city. After a gradual left turn, the racers travel briefly across the Chao Phraya River with rowboats that they can perform tricks off of. After a sharp left and then a sharp right close to the Democracy Monument and then a sharp left, the racers travel through the Maeklong Railway Market, where they can either go onto the stalls via wooden planks or drive in the middle along some train tracks. This is followed by a U-turn, where racers can go under the BTS Skytrain surrounded by the King Power Mahanakhon, shopping malls that resemble the MBK Centre and Siam Paragon, and the Giant Swing, with Inky Piranha Plants and cars. Alternatively, they can go on top of the Skytrain. The course then takes a left turn next to a giant Ganesha statue and the Phra Buddhasaiyas and then a right turn where the racers complete the lap at the finish line. There exists a bug where turning right triggers the propeller even though the water is shallow enough to not count it as a true underwater section.

Reverse, Trick, and Reverse-trick Variations[]

The reverse variant adds an extra Inky Piranha Plant to the train tracks of the Skytrain and a glider ramp to the Chao Phraya River area. Rocky wrenches are added to the lower part of the market section in the trick variant, while the river segment has trickable Waterspouts. In the reverse-trick variation, the stationary vehicles have vanished and the racers are forced onto the upper part of the market section, and a second Mario Kart gate appears on top of the goal gate, accessible through some chain-link ramps that have been placed before.

Bangkok Rush 2[]

The second layout of the course starts in the same place as the first layout, facing the same direction, but the racers deviate from the first layout at the first turn, heading right instead of left, leading to a street. After another gradual left turn, they go up a parking garage moving upwards before going out of an open window above the Train Night Market Ratchada, whose tents the racers can bounce off; they can even perform tricks if the player presses the trick button as the racers land. Alternatively, they can go through a hole in the tents to drive on the road underneath. Afterwards, they make another right turn to reunite with the first layout; it proceeds with the first layout from there, including the BTS Skytrain area.

Reverse, Trick, and Reverse-trick Variations[]

The racers have to glide over the Train Night Market Ratchada area to get to the parking lot in the reverse variant due to their inability to scale the wall just by driving up it as Mario Kart Tour lacks the Anti-gravity feature. The trick variant forces them to bounce on the Train Night Market Ratchada's tents and take the top path in the Skytrain section and adds a second Mario Kart gate above the main one, accessible via a chain-link path that leads onto the roof, where the racers can find another chain-link path. The reverse-trick variant removes the cars and the Inky Piranha Plants beneath the railway, blocks off part of the route, and adds a glide ramp just before the start/finish line.

Bangkok Rush 3[]

The racers start in the same place that they start in the first two layouts in this layout, but this time, they face the opposite direction. The racers make two orthogonal left turns before driving onto the decorated street lined with parked tuk-tuks. However, just before the parking garage section, the racers deviate from the second layout, going up a small hill and going off a glider ramp, gliding either under or around the Giant Swing and Democracy Monument. It then continues in the first layout reversed from the Democracy Monument (except the racers must take a side-street with stationary trucks with surfboards that they can use to bounce off tuk-tuks by the river instead of driving through it) to the finish line.

Reverse, Trick, and Reverse-trick Variations[]

The surfboard trucks only appear in the regular variation. In the reverse variant, the racers go around the Democracy Monument, and the glide ramp appears afterward. The trick variant has potholes that sometimes spit out water that can be tricked off of, and the glide ramp is moved further down the track to the Democracy Monument, so the racers need a chain-link bridge to get over the Skytrain. In the reverse-trick variant, the racers are forced to circle the Democracy Monument once, making the lap take around five to ten seconds longer due to a counter-clockwise loop of chain-link bridges.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Bangkok Rush returns in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as part of Wave 4 of the Booster Course Pass DLC, as the first race of the Boomerang Cup. It serves as an expanded and combined version of the three routes for the course, and appears brighter yet paler and foggier compared to its original aesthetic. The Inky Piranha Plants in the BTS Skytrain section have been removed, with their place being taken by regular upward-facing Piranha Plants from Mario Kart 64. The Sky Asiatique now spins, and fireworks have been added to the background. Koopa Paratroopae can be seen as Spectators near the Talat Rotfai. The curbs at the start of the Bangkok Rush 2 route and at the end of the Bangkok Rush 3 route have been removed, presumably to make the turns easier.

In this version of the course, the first lap of the course follows the first layout fully. When the racers begin the second lap, they will be redirected onto the second route until they reach the part where the road divides into the parking lot and the hill, after which they will be forced to follow the third route (except for a new side-street with crabs that they need to avoid, after which they rejoin with the third route), completing the second lap in the direction contrary to the first lap. It then follows the third route until the aforementioned split again, where the racers take the second route, going into the parking garage, followed by the Night Market Ratchada section and then the BTS Skyrail area, after which they finish the race facing the same direction they started.

Due to the fact that the racers finish the race in the same direction they started, Bangkok Rush can be driven in reverse briefly without the rescue Lakitu's interference, with Bangkok Rush 2's route being followed; however, as Bangkok Rush 2's reverse variant needs a Glide Ramp, the racers will be stuck in the Night Market Ratchada area until they drive in the proper direction.

Variants each lap takes from[]

Lap Variant
1 Bangkok Rush 1
2 and 3 Bangkok Rush 2 & 3 (Lap 2 starts with the former variant and finishes with the latter, while Lap 3 is the opposite.)

Shortcuts[]

  • There are two openings at the corners of the turns near the finish line, and depending on what layout you are racing on, you can take these small corner cuts to shave off a bit of time, no mushrooms nor power items are needed to execute this cut.
  • After you bypass the Giant Swing and the Democracy Monument, you can utilize a substantial grass cut off to the right, where you must glide into it and use a mushroom or any power item to take it.

Trivia![]

  • This course was originally supposed to come in Wave 5 of the Booster Course Pass as the first course of the Cherry Cup (as evidenced by it being labeled in the files as "Cnsw_55"), but it got pushed up to Wave 4 for as of yet unknown reasons.
  • This is one of three courses to finish the second lap in the direction opposite to the first lap in the Booster Course Pass, the other two being Sydney Sprint and Berlin Byways. Unlike when they race on those tracks, however, racers finish in the same direction that they started.
  • This is the only city track to have green Arrow Fields, with all the rest using red. Kalimari Desert, while it also uses this colour for its Arrow Fields, is not a city track.
    • The Arrow Fields may have been colored green to increase their visibility.
