The perfect way for transportation! A Giant Cannon as seen in Maple Treeway in Mario Kart Wii.

A Cannon (also called a Barrel Cannon) is a feature found in various tracks found throughout the Mario Kart series. Its main purpose is to launch players from one side of the track to the other over a large chasm to loop around back to the Checkered line. Being launched out of a Cannon would also make any drivers temporarily invincible from all attacks, allowing them to get a "Shock Dodge", where a Lightning's affect is nullified. Additionally, Red Shells and Green Shells cannot go through the Cannon, the POW Block and Blooper's effect won't do anything, and the Thunder Cloud will instantly disappear. If a Spiny Shell is coming for you and you hop in the Cannon as it's about to strike, you can avoid it however if done before that, the Spiny Shell will simply go around the Cannon and strike after you land.

This innovative feature debuted in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in DK Mountain, it would take players all the way up to the Volcano of the course. Two Cannons are also seen in Mushroom Bridge in an alternate path and Daisy Cruiser below decks. Going through these secret Cannons will also give players a Double Item Box.

In Mario Kart DS, a Cannon is seen in Waluigi Pinball where it launches the players through a light tunnel straight to the Pinball Machine. Another Cannon is also seen in Airship Fortress where it launches players to the Fortress side of the course from the Airship. The secret Cannon from Mushroom Bridge has been removed along with the section.

In Mario Kart Wii, Cannons are seen in DK Summit where they launch players all the way to the peak of the mountain. They are also seen in Maple Treeway where they launch players near the treetop. Cannons also return in DK Mountain.

Cannon Airship

Mario and Luigi make an entrance in the Cannon on Airship Fortress.

With the Gliding Feature in Mario Kart 7, there were no Cannons in any of the new courses but retro courses Waluigi Pinball, Maple Treeway, and Airship Fortress include them however, the Gliding feature has been merged with the Cannons making it so players glide out of the Cannons to the other side. This leaves players more vulnerable to enemy attacks as the Cannon sections now function like the Gliding sections only with less control. If a Lightning or a Spiny Shell strikes, there's nothing you can do, you're going to fall and be sent very far back so be careful. Also, in the game's remake of Daisy Cruiser, the Cannon section is now a tube with a couple Dash Panels and a single Item Box.

In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Cannons function in the same way as the previous game. One Cannon is seen in Sweet Sweet Canyon where it takes players to the syrup lake. Another Cannon is also seen in Cloudtop Cruise where it transports players from the Airship to the Lightning-riddled Stormy skies. A Cannon is also seen in the retro course Yoshi Valley.
