Think a chained Chain Chomp is dangerous? Well what if it was unchained and rampaging freely. Chomps are essentially chainless Chain Chomps and due to this, can roll freely around the tracks. These raging Chomps pack quite a wallop as they can not only knock your vehicle over but they can also FLATTEN you making you lose heaps of speed. It seems as though their new freedom has also caused them to grow as Chomps are normally much larger than Chain Chomps. Chomps can commonly be found on Rainbow Roads but they can also be found in other places too. Prior to appearing in Mario Kart, Chomps have also appeared in several other Mario games as well including Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Galaxy.
History[]
A Chomp appears in Mario Kart 64 in Rainbow Road as a hazard. It can be seen chomping through the Rainbow Road snaking left and right as it does this. Contact with the Chomp will knock you and your kart high into the air allowing the competition to catch up so avoid! There is no way to get by a Chomp unharmed unless you have a Starman.
In Mario Kart Wii a humongous Chomp can be seen in the battle course, Chain Chomp Wheel. Like the other racers, it's seen in it's slot at the start of the battle but as soon as the time hits 2:53:999 (7 seconds in), the Chomp will emerge from it's slot and start rolling around the arena flattening any racers foolish enough to hit it. Being hit by the Chomp will cause you to not only be flattened making you lose some speed but it can also cause you to lose a Balloon and half of your Coins which can really zing your Team in the long run. To be immune to the Chomp, you will need to be under the effects of either a Mega Mushroom or a Starman. Be careful when scouring the arena for Item Boxes.
Two Chomps can also be seen in Mario Kart 7 in Rainbow Road. They are seen rolling around on the moon and bouncing on the craters. Avoid the Chomps as they can knock you over in this strait. Being under the effects of a Starman or a Bullet Bill will clear you of the Chomps. Precision is everything here, especially when attempting tricks of the craters.
A Chomp can also be seen in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the remake of N64 Rainbow Road. Unlike before, instead of chomping at the roads, the Chomp instead is seen bouncing around on the wavy part of the road before the second section. Being hit by the Chomp can still knock you about so be careful, the Chomp however is relatively easy to avoid this time due to it's newfound bouncing tendencies.

Trivia![]
- Some Chain Chomps are seen rampaging free from their posts however these are not Chomps as they still have the Chain attached to them.
- In Mario Kart Wii, the Chomp is so large that it actually is one of the only two hazards in the game that is shown on the minimap, the other being the Mega Thwomp from Thwomp Desert.
- Coincidently, these are both Wii Battle Stages.
