A Freezie (フリーザー), originally called Slipice (スリップアイス) and sometimes spelled Freezy, is a relatively uncommon enemy found in the Mario series. First appearing in one of the earliest titles of the franchise, Mario Bros., these blocks of ice would freeze platforms, making them slippery with ice and thus difficult to traverse.
In the Mario Kart spinoff franchise, huge Freezies can be seen on the frozen lake in Sherbet Land, both in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and the revamps in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Running into them will slow down the racer and even freeze them, depending on the game.
Freezies are composed of chunks of light bluish ice, varying in size. They are somewhat transparent, and while the base of their body is faceted to be kind of smooth, the top of their "head" is very jagged, which sort of resembles hair. They will often look very glistening, and they have a very distinct face of looking confused or sad or something (sometimes plain black or glowing). And even if they were happy, they couldn't show it, because that face is frozen onto them!
In Mario Kart
The ice lake near the end of Sherbet Land is particularly hazardous because multiple Freezies are spread out across it. Running into one causes you to be frozen in a block of ice for a few seconds, and it also sends the Freezy skating across the ice, encasing any other unfortunate racer it hits in frozen water. Once they hit a wall, they will smash to pieces (they can also be thrust forward by an Item.)GCN Sherbet Land, Freezies are a lighter shade of blue and also have glowing mouths and eyes. Luckily, instead of being flash-frozen like in the Nintendo GameCube version, they only spin out karts and shatter upon impact.
- Freezies generally only appear in sub-series Mario games, such as the Super Smash Bros., Mario Party, Mario Tennis, and Mario Baseball series.
- In Japanese, the name フリーザー, "Furīzā" translates to "Freezer".
- An unlockable Stamp of a Freezie can be obtained by beating the Staff Ghost of GCN Sherbet Land on Time Trial mode in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
