Glitches are a feature in video games that can occur due to programming oversights. Sometimes, their effects are subtle, but glitches can also impact gameplay greatly. Mario Kart 8 has some glitches listed below:
- Displaced Hitbox Glitch: This glitch can be triggered by driving close to a Koopa shell and not getting hit; there is a chance that the racer will still get hit, even though they did not touch the Koopa shell.
- Shell Shard Glitch: In Mario Kart TV Mode, if characters get hit by a Koopa Shell and the scene is played in reverse after the hit, the broken shell's shards will still be their presence not being supposed to happen at that point.
- Spiny Shell Attacks Incorrect Racer: N64 Yoshi Valley has this due to the course's numerous paths. Occasionally, Spiny Shells may change their target from the first place player and strike the second place player. This most likely happens when the two players are close together in terms of progress through the course and go onto different paths when the road forks in two and the progress markers are inadequately calibrated between the two paths.
- Shifting Banana Glitch: This can be triggered if the player deploys a Banana at the correct angle so it can be blown away to a tilted part of the course. If this glitch is performed correctly, the Banana will appear to move on its own.
- Bowser Castle Floor Phase Glitch: This glitch cannot be performed easily, but if the player gets caught in some way under the Bowser Statue's hands, they might phase through the floor rather than getting squished. This only occurs in Bowser Castle.
- Rainbow Road's Broken Lap Counter: N64 Rainbow Road can have this happen where the player glides to the finish and uses a mushroom and a perfectly timed hop. They can therefore explore N64 Rainbow Road backwards on the first lap. On the way back to the start line from anywhere in that area, they game counts the second checkpoint as the 2nd lap and the third checkpoint as the final lap, ending the course on the second checkpoint.
- Cloudtop Cruise Music Stop Glitch: If the player gets hit by a red Koopa shell, a Spiny Shell, or a Thunderbolt en route to Cloudtop Cruise's storm cloud, the music will temporarily stop until the racer in question reaches the platform.
- Cloudtop Cruise Trick Glitch: Rarely, the player can perform a Jump Boost via one of the electrocuted Dash Panels in Cloudtop Cruise's storm cloud.
