Welcome to the Manual of Style, or MoS, a guideline and/or reference page that serves as the official layout for articles in the Mario Kart Racing Wiki! Revamped as of 2/14/2018, its overall goal is to make the wiki much more organized and universal, which will in turn make it much better, informative, and more enjoyable. While you're not required to create and edit pages exactly according to the MoS, it's definitely the optimal way to go... the eventual goal is to have all pages fulfill the manual.

Now, there might be a few miscellaneous articles that won't exactly fit into the new MoS, so for information on how to create or edit those articles, you can ask an administrator.

(Note: Due to the massive impact the MoS has on the wiki, administrators cannot substantially amend this page unless a majority of admins agree on the changes.)

General Article Guidelines

Here are the general rules for all articles on the wiki. This will just give you a basic idea of how articles should be written and/or edited. For a more detailed look at types of pages, just go to the "Specific Types" section of this MoS.

Article Titles

 • The official name of an article should be used as the title, not the popular name (example: Spiny Shell, not Blue Shell.)
 • If there's no official name, choose what it is commonly known as or to the best of your ability (ex: Koopa Zapper.)
 • If there are multiple possible names for a page, such as Crab or Sidestepper, use the latest name (so it would be Sidestepper.)
 • For articles that can mean more than one thing (ex: Bowser's Castle), a disambiguation article should be used. Each of the individual articles should be abbreviated to where it came from, such as Sherbet Land (GCN).
 • Capitalize all proper nouns of the page, or the first word (unless it is stylized in lower-case such as amiibo.) So, for example, it would be Mario (series), not Mario (Series).

Writing Style

 • The Mario Kart Racing Wiki uses the American spellings of English for articles.
 • Other languages are rarely used (ex: Since the series is originally from Japan, the Japanese name of an article can be given in parentheses after the English name is given in bold.)
 • Pages are expected to have excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, good sentence structure, and just an overall easy-to-read format (not like 1st grade easy, but like a regular person-easy).
 • Opinions in articles are generally a no-go (ex: Mario freakin' sucks), but minimal casually written opinion to add a little humor are acceptable (ex: ...making the kart look really awesome!)
 • 2nd person writing (using "you") is permitted as long as its very minimal and is used appropriately.
 • When writing an article, express your creative side! It's important to be mostly informative, but add humor in your writing every now and then, and mix it up with some nice wordplay. The wiki is a great place to hone your writing skills!
 • Paragraphs also should be used when appropriate.
 • Cursing in articles other then very moderate "dang", "darn", or "stupid" (which aren't even curse words...) is not permitted.

Headings

 • Headings should be used often in articles to separate different sections of information.
 • When sections can be divided into sections, be sure and keep adding "=" signs to the new headings to make them smaller. More on this later.
 • Headings should be all caps except for articles (a, an, the), conjunctions, and prepositions. One exception though is the word "series." It should be left lower case.
 • Only press enter once after a paragraph under a heading. If its a heading under a heading, you don't have to press enter.

Infoboxes

 • You'd be surprised how much better pages look with an infobox. Always add them at the top right of pages when possible. Fill in the appropriate data and add a picture.
 • Additional infoboxes such as character/item charts or statistics should be used later in the page when appropriate. (These are usually centered).

Trivia

 • Trivia is the fun part: add interesting data here that is not commonly known. It can include Mario Kart fun facts, references to other games/culture/media... you get the point.
 • After a large-scale edit conflict in October 2017, the majority of users on the wiki decided to use "Trivia!" as the heading for the trivia section (because it was how the original Mario Kart website stylized their trivia). The administrators beg you to use this heading, because we definitely don't need a repeat of what happened... it was a catastrophe.

Galleries

 • Galleries are a great way to make an article look ten times as better. They should be added whenever possible at the end of a page.
 • Galleries can be added sometimes in the middle of pages when there's a character list or something like that.
 • If galleries have an excessive amount of images, a separate page should be created for them, and a redirect should be left on the article.

Categories

 • Categories that the page fits into should always be added. They are a valuable tool in finding related articles and overall classification.
 • Category pages must have a short description about itself, as well as categories related to it.
 • Users can see the categorization policy for more details.

Construction/other templates

 • Pages under construction should be marked with the construction template at the top of the article.
 • Pages under 500 bytes must also be marked with a stub template as well as construction.

Other

 • Headings that don't have any information released yet or the info is not known should have To be announced... or TBA... written below them.
 • Game titles or game series should always be italicized and never abbreviated.

Specific Types of Articles Guidelines

Now we head on to the more particular Manual of Style for articles. Almost every type of page is given a rough outline below, and all you have to do is copy the script in blue, paste it to a new page, and fill in all the areas that require information. We've marked them with "**" to make it easier on what to fill in. Just delete the comment and the "**" surrounding it, fill in the info, and publish!

Game Articles

This section shows you how to create/edit game articles, like Mario Kart Wii for example. Obviously, games can differ a whole lot in the series, so don't be afraid to adapt this style to a specific game. Creating or updating these articles can be very difficult, but hopefully this MoS will guide you through it.

(Note: Templates used in game articles can very vastly because of the very many differences, so take this into consideration. Because of the complexity, some of the template bases are absent and are replaced by lists. To see the basis templates for game articles, go to the Mario Kart 8 page. Also, some of the stat box coding goes onwards [right] in the blue box below, so be sure to copy and paste all of it.)

**Add the game name in .**

Track Articles

The Tracks section deals with how to make or update track articles, such as Mushroom Gorge. Most of these will be pretty easy to do, although the layout may take some time.

**Add a short paragraph stating the tracks name, followed by the Japanese name,
the cup it is in, and the game.**

**Then, in a new paragraph, give a very small description of the track.**

Layout
**Add an image in this area if possible. Make sure you insert well.**
**Describe the layout of the track. If it also has a newer version, separate the
two versions into different game headings (===Game===). Be nice and descr-
-iptive.**

Shortcuts
**If no pic was added in "==Layout==", add it here.**
**List all possible shortcuts using "*" (if any).**

Battle Stage Articles

Here we have the MoS for Battle Stage articles (Block Fort, for example). These will be pretty easy articles to make or edit, since they are usually not that big.

{{Battle-stage-infobox

Racer/Character Articles

This is the racer/character section (a racer is someone you can race with, like Bowser, and a character is someone you can't race with but they are still living, like a Magikoopa.) These pages will have a lot of info, so get ready to create/edit a lot.

**Add a introductory paragraph with the name of the character in bold, follow-
-ed by the Japanese name, what game they were originally from and their role in
the Mario series.**

**In a new paragraph, add their role in the Mario Kart series, their main weight
class, and a summary of the games they were in.**

Characteristics
**Add a high quality picture here and insert it well.**
**Describe the character, and do a good job. If their appearance changes between
games, use "===Game===" as a differentiation.**

How to Unlock
**List ways to unlock him/her (only if they are unlockable [if not skip this he-
-adline]).**

Game Appearances
**If you didn't put an image under "Characteristics", put one here.**
**List what games they were in and put their weight class behind a colon next to
the game. Also, if they have a Special Item, put it here behind a comma.**

Vehicles
Karts
**Add artwork or an image of them with one of their vehicles if possible.**
**List the character's Karts.**

Bikess
**Add artwork or an image of them with one of their vehicles if possible.**

**List the character's ATVs (if any).**

Staff Ghosts
**Add an image in this area. Make sure you insert well.**
**List all of the character's Staff Ghosts, and put what game it was in in
"(game)" next to the track.**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the soundtrack (if any). If none, don't put the hea-
-dline.**

Gallery
<gallery>
**Insert images of him/her here. Try to keep good organization by using different
headings if needed.**

-itor on the right, as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Item Articles

This right here is the Manual of Style for Item articles, such as a Triple Red Shell. These articles are really fun to update or edit, and they usually all follow the same pattern.

**Add a short paragraph saying what the Item's name is, the Japanese name, and
then describe what the Item is, and what game it's originally from.**

**In a new paragraph, add a short description of what it does. Also list all the
games it's in.**

Usage
Offense
Vehicle/Vehicle Part Articles

This MoS encompasses a lot of stuff, so you can expect it to vary a lot. However, it's the basis for any vehicle, like the Flame Flyer, or any vehicle part, like the Wood wheels. Not too much to input, but it can be painful sometimes, especially with Mario Kart Arcade GP DX vehicle descriptions... *gasp*.

(Note: the stat box coding goes onwards [right] in the blue box below, so be sure to copy and paste all of it.)

Vehicle-part-infobox**Add a introductory paragraph with the name of the vehicle/part in bold, follo-
-wed by the Japanese name, what games it is in, a short description on the design,
and a short blurb about the stats.**

**Add another paragraph if it is an unlockable vehicle that says it needs to be u-
nlocked.**

Description
**Add an image in this area if possible. Make sure you insert well.**
**Give a description of the vehicle, noting design and colors.**

Color Variants
**If you did not add an image to the "Description" area, then please add it to th-
-is area.**
**Add any color variants it might have. If the color variant has a specific name,
(ex: Type X), put it into the heading.**

How to Unlock
**Add a picture if you have not added it to the Description or Color Variants hea-
-dings.**
**Put methods of unlocking in the area (if any), separated by asterisks ("*").**

Stats
**Put a short paragraph explaining what the vehicle/part is good at, and then put
the appropriate stats.**

Obstacles/Hazards Articles

Hazard articles, such as a Goomba, are very similar to character/racer articles, but they usually won't have as much info, and so they are a little easier to make or update. However, note the differences between living and non-living obstacles.

**Add a introductory paragraph with the name of the obstacle in bold, followed
by the Japanese name, what games it is in, and a short description of how
it effects racers.**

Characteristics
**(Note: put "description" instead of "characteristics" if its not a living chara-
-cter.)**
**Add an image in this area if possible. Make sure you insert well.**
**Give a description of the obstacle, noting design and colors.**

Track Appearances]]
**Add an image in this area if no image is in the characteristics. Make sure you
insert well.**
**List all the tracks this hazard appears in, using a ===Game=== heading
for separate titles.**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the obstacle (if any). If none, don't put the head-
-line.**

**Insert images of the obstacle here. Try to keep good organization by using
different headings if needed.**

**Add a navigation template if possible.**

**Add possible languages here (ex: De:_____).**

**Add categories to the page using the editor on the right (needs "Obstacles" for
sure), as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Track Features

This MoS includes articles like Jump Pads, and unfortunately there is no designated info box for it yet. Also, because of the variety of them, the MoS could change up a bit from article to article. Just keep that in mind when creating or editing one of these pages.

**Add a picture here, and insert it well (If you know what I mean, heh heh).**
**Name the track feature in bold, followed by the Japanese name, and then add a s-
-hort description of what it does.**

**Start another paragraph that lists what games it's in.**

Description
**Add another picture here.**
**Explain what the track feature does. If it varies from game to game, use the he-
-adline "===Game===" and describe them separately. Also give a small desc-
-ription of what it looks like.**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the feature (if any). If none, don't put the headli-
-ne.**

Gallery
<gallery>
**Insert images of the game mode here. Try to keep good organization by using dif-
-ferent headings if needed.**
</gallery>

**Add a navigation template if possible.**

**Add possible languages here (ex: De:_____).**

**Add categories to the page using the editor on the right (needs "Features" for
sure), as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Game Mode Articles

This would include Balloon Battle or some other game mode. Again, like track features, we don't have an info box for it yet, and game modes can differ a lot. So get ready to be creative, because thia style section might not be as helpful as the others.

**Add a picture of the game mode being played or artwork of it.**
**Name the article in bold, followed by the Japanese name, and then add a short d-
-escription of how the game mode works.**

**Start another paragraph that lists what games it's in.**

Game Mode Description
**Add a picture here, and insert it in well.**
**Give an in depth description of the game mode. If it differs from game to game,
separate the descriptions with "===Game===" and describe them.**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the game mode (if any). If none, don't put the head-
-line.**

Gallery
<gallery>
**Insert images of the game mode here. Try to keep good organization by using dif-
-ferent headings if needed.**
</gallery>

**Add a navigation template if possible.**

**Add possible languages here (ex: De:_____).**

**Add categories to the page using the editor on the right (needs "Game Modes" fo-
-r sure), as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Soundtrack Articles

Well, soundtrack articles (ex: Mario Kart 64 Race Tracks) seem easy to do, but getting the information on them can be hard because they aren't too common. The Manual of Style still could be improved for soundtracks, but the section below should make the article pretty good.

**Insert soundtrack name.**__NOTOC__
**Put the soundtrack's name in bold and italics, followed by the Japanese name
and what game it features music from. List the main composer(s) and who played it,
as well as the release date.**

Soundtrack List
Main Tracks
**Add a picture or pictures here.**
**Add the tracks in order using "#", followed by their run time in parentheses.**

Bonus Tracks
**Add bonus tracks (only add this heading if there are some).**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the soundtrack (if any). If none, don't put the hea-
-dline.**

Gallery
<gallery>
**Insert images of the soundtrack here. Try to keep good organization by using di-
-iferent headings if needed.**
</gallery>

**Add a navigation template if possible (ex: ).**

**Add possible languages here (ex: De:_____).**

**Add categories to the page using the editor on the right (needs "Soundtracks" f-
-or sure), as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Hardware Articles

The Hardware MoS encompasses basically anything physical Mario Kart related item that isn't merchandise (like the Wii Wheel), so as you can imagine, these pages will vary greatly. Use the below template to get a basis, and the rest is up to you!

**Name the article in bold, followed by the Japanese name, and then give a short
description of the hardware by saying what it is and when it was released (release
date usually just for console).**

**Add another paragraph talking about its relation to the Mario Kart series of ga-
-mes (ex: what game was released on a console.)**

Description
**Describe the hardware and what it does in depth.**

Accessories
**(Note: if no accessories, then don't include this heading.)**
**Add an image or images to this area, and insert them flush with the article.**
**List accessories under "===(Accessory)===" headings and give a brief description
of them.**

Mario Kart Games Released on the Console
**(Note: only add this headline if a the article is on a console.**
**Add pictures of the games.**
**List the games released on it (including Virtual Console) with "*".**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the hardawre (if any). If none, don't even put the
headline.**

Gallery
<gallery>
**Insert images of the hardware here. Try to keep good organization by using diff-
-errent headings if needed.**
</gallery>

**Add a navigation template if possible.**

**Add possible languages here (ex: De:_____).**

**Add categories to the page using the editor on the right (needs "Hardware" for
sure), as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Software Articles

Again, no specific info box. However, software articles (such as Miiverse) should be a bit easier to do because most software share common traits. But be wary of the discontinuation headings, and only use if necessary.

**Add a picture of the software logo/home screen.**
**Name the page in bold, give the Japanese name, and then give a short description
over what the software is and does, its release date (optional), and consoles its
on.**

**Add another paragraph explaining how it relates to the Mario Kart series.**

**Add one last paragraph saying it was discontinued (only needed if it was).**

Description
**Add another picture of the software being used.**
**Give an in depth description of what the software does, and go ahead and use a
new "===(Heading)===" or multiple if there are features that deserve their own de-
-voted section.**
**If the software varies from game to game, use a differing "===Game===" head-
-ing to differentiate.**

Discontinuation
**Explain the software's discontinuation (obviously, the heading is only needed if
it's discontinued.)**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the software (if any). If none, don't even put the
headline.**

Gallery
<gallery>
**Insert images of the software here. Try to keep good organization by using diff-
-erent headings if needed.**
</gallery>

**Add a navigation template if possible.**

**Add possible languages here (ex: De:_____).**

**Add categories to the page using the editor on the right (needs "Software" for
sure), as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Person Articles

There aren't too many articles about actual people on the wiki (one would be Shigeru Miyamoto), and so sadly there is no info box template for them yet. However, the below Manual of Style is actually pretty solid, and you shouldn't have much trouble using it when creating or updating a person page with it.

**Add a picture of them here.**
**Put the person's name in bold and summarize who this person is and what they are
known for.**

**Add a follow-up paragraph about their relation the Mario Kart series.**

Biography
**Add another picture of them here. Be sure to insert it well.**
**Describe the person's life in depth here.**

Mario Kart series
**Describe their relation to the Mario Kart series in depth here.**

Trivia!
**Add interesting facts about the person (if any). If none, don't even put the he-
-adline.**

Gallery
<gallery>
**Insert images of the person here. Try to keep good organization by using differ-
-ent headings if needed.**
</gallery>

**Add a navigation template if possible.**

**Add possible languages here (ex: De:_____).**

**Add categories to the page using the editor on the right (needs "People" for su-
-re), as well as a brief summary of your edit.**

Miscellaneous Articles

It's really difficult to give a miscellaneous article, or an article that just doesn't fit into any other categories, an MoS simply because they can vary so greatly. However, by looking over some of the other articles, you should be able to formulate a pretty good impromptu article style.

Conclusion

Well, we hope you've found this Manual of Style a little helpful. Again, if you have any questions about how to do any of this stuff, the staff here is very friendly and helpful, so don't hesitate to ask an administrator!

Many thanks to Lumoshi, the father of the wiki, for creating the MoS.
