Since the release of Super Mario Kart, every track has consisted of a loop which is driven around for 3 laps (Baby Park, Wario Colosseum, and tracks in Super Mario Kart have a different number of laps). Mario Kart 7 introduced a new formula to races: Section-Based courses. Section-Based courses consist of many checkpoints, which mark a new lap, rather than just one starting line. Some Section-Based tracks take you back to the starting line, while others finish at a completely separate section of the track. Not all Section-Based tracks have 3 checkpoints; courses such as Kalimari Desert have a mixture of both laps and Checkpoints.
