Statistics[]
The Shooting Star is above-average on all stats, with a bias towards speed and acceleration, but is significantly lighter than Mario's other karts; in fact, it has the lowest base weight in the game, tied with Yoshi's Egg 1. It also has the 9th strongest Mini-Turbo in the game, just barely long enough to allow PRB racing, although it is very difficult to maintain with this kart.
Its strong, well-rounded stats aside from weight make it a solid choice for normal play. Unfortunately, Luigi's Poltergust 4000 completely outclasses this kart in almost all situations. The Poltergust has equal or stronger stats in almost every category, and has significantly stronger Mini-Turbos. Although the Poltergust has significantly lower drift, drift is a largely unimportant stat in Mario Kart DS as low-drift karts can hop tightly around sharp turns to compensate, and its higher handling fully compensates for this decrease. Thus, its higher drift over the Poltergust is only helpful for beginners who cannot utilize or are unaware of the hopping technique. Due to these factors, the Shooting Star is never seen in competitive play.
It shares its speed with Daisy's Light Dancer, it shares its acceleration with Luigi's Standard LG, and it shares its handling and drift with Waluigi's Gold Mantis.
