The Train is a major hazard found in Kalimari Desert of Mario Kart 64. It drives around the track in a loop and whenever players approach the crossway, the lights at the railway crossing flash as the train crosses and racers have to wait until the train passes. If any racer is very stupid enough and decides to continue driving anyway, then they will be sent flying high into the air. Dropping heaps of speed, so it's best to wait until it passes, players can also follow the train and explore the tunnels it goes through during it's loop.
The Train returns in the Mario Kart 7 remake of Kalimari Desert. In this game, the Train behaves the same however, there are ramps with Glide Panels on the sides of the track before the crossways allowing players to Glide over The Train entirely saving a very long and tedious wait also allowing them to get WAY ahead of the competition because while they're wait, you're soaring above the train and to victory. Also, getting hit by the Train is not as devastating as before but you do lose 3 Coins. Also, the tunnels the track goes through are considered out of bounds and as a result, can no longer be explored.
The train also appears in Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It has a similar design to that of the 3DS version, in updated graphics and the coaches gain side rods. In Tour, the Trains are no longer harmful and instead racers can trick on them as well as being sent in the air when they touch one of them. Also, the tunnels can be driven through again.
Trivia![]
- Paying homage to the Nintendo 64, The Train has a "64" printed on its front. This is retained in the iQue localization and in the Mario Kart 7 remake of the course.
- The Barrel Train appears to be reminiscent of this Train as they look somewhat similar in design, not to mention the fact that they're both trains.
- In Mario Kart 7 and in Mario Kart 64, there are two trains roaming the tracks, this is because the train has less cars and moves slower in that version, the second train is absent in multiplayer.
- The train's consist is shortened in Mario Kart 64's Multiplayer mode.
- In the Wii Virtual Console release of MK64, the train's wheels are black instead of red.
- The train has had different types of whistle sounds whenever it appeared in the games of Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart 7, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In Mario Kart 64, its whistle sounds like that of a 6 chime whistle. In Mario Kart 7, its whistle is one of Sierra Railway #3’s whistle which was in fact used in hundreds of pieces of media because it comes from a Universal Studios Sound Effects Library. And in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, its whistle is one of Nevada Northern #40’s whistle but some steps higher pitched.
