Purple energy shoots out of Mario's tires as he saves up for the Ultra Mini-Turbo.
In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a new outrageous level of a drifting boost can be obtained, the Ultra Mini-Turbo. These new boosts are rewarded to players who maintain a drift long enough to surpass the regular Mini-Turbo and Super Mini-Turbo. As expected, the speed gained from one of these boosts is astronomical!
A new feature in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Smart Steering, has to be disabled in order to perform the ultra-powerful boost.
Description[]

Bowser has just reached the Ultra Mini-Turbo threshold.
To get an Ultra Mini-Turbo, you'll first have to start a Drift by pressing and holding L and titling the control stick either left or right. Now all you have to do is be patient. After a short while, blue sparks will shoot out from your Kart/Bike. Letting go of L right here will give you a regular Mini-Turbo, which is good, but not good enough... Persisting through the drift, and orange fire will eventually start. Now you've reached the Super Mini-Turbo--better, but not the best. Waiting just a little more, purple SPARKS will start to flash under your tires. At this point you've reached the Ultra Mini-Turbo... Release the L button for a very, very long boost. In fact, the duration is equal to a Mushroom!
Because it takes so long to charge up an Ultra Mini-Turbo, they can only really be gotten at giant hairpin/U-turns.
Trivia![]
- An official Mini-Turbo tutorial video released by Nintendo for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, shows that a regular Mini-Turbo lasts for 0.621 seconds, a Super Mini-Turbo lasts for 1.674 seconds, and the Ultra Mini-Turbo lasts for 2.633 seconds.
- The Ultra Mini-Turbo has more of a crackling noise then the other Mini-Turbo tiers, likely because it's the strongest.
- There's a small debate on whether the sparks are pink or purple; it seems to right in between the two colors, so it really depends on personal perception. However, if you go on the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Info, and then select Driving Techniques, they are actually purple. The only exception is the British English version of the game, in which they are indicated as pink.
