Unagis are colossal eels that reside underwater thought Mario games. In the Mario Kart series, they mainly appear in the inaccessible areas like in the outside of the tube in Koopa Cape, the windows of Chain Chomp Wheel. They are also seen in the lower deck of Mario Kart 7's Daisy Cruiser. In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, A Unagi appears in Dolphin Shoals near the end of the ocean section where racers can bounce off it's back to do tricks. It also has Coins along its back.

- In the recently released Super Mario Odyssey the Unagi is known as the Maw-Ray however despite this, it is still known as the Unagi in Mario Kart.
- The Unagi in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe looks a lot angrier than then ones in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7.
