Mario Kart Racing Wiki

Mario Kart Insanity, also known as Mario Kart 9 in Japan, is a kart-racing game exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. It is the ninth Mario Kart game in the series. Instead of using Nintendo Network, Mario Kart Insanity uses a new internet service called HammerBro101 Wi-Fi Connection. Many key elements from previous games return, such as bikes from Mario Kart Wii, items to hinder other players, and a character roster from which players can select a driver. As with all other Mario Kart games, the goal is to strive for 1st place among other competitors by using items and taking the fastest routes to secure the leads. New elements to this game include increasing the number of racers from 12 to 16 and introducing a new type of vehicle to the series: hovercrafts.

Gameplay[]

The racer amount has increased from 12 to 16. Bikes now have the ability to teleport anywhere. Hovercrafts are introduced in this game, which can travel both on land and in water. Ultra shortcuts from Mario Kart Wii return, as well as Expert Staff Ghosts, halfpipes, and wheelies. Drifting has reverted to its Mario Kart DS iteration, allowing players to easily perform a technique called snaking (which was harder to do in Wii, 7, and 8 due to Nintendo simplifying drifting).

Another new change is the point system used for Grand Prix races. With sixteen racers competing in each race, the point value has increased. Also, 7th place is not a losing position. The following chart shows the difference of the point spreads from previous games to this installment.

Vehicles[]

Mario Kart Insanity goes back to using pre-made vehicles used in the first six Mario Kart installments. Bikes get the ability to do wheelies back, and they are able to snake better than Karts. ATVs from Mario Kart 8 return, and Hovercrafts are new to the series in this game. There are six of each type of vehicle for each size class, making each size class have 24 vehicles. The Items stat from Mario Kart DS returns, and it determines your chance to get a powerful item (for example, karts with a higher items stat are more likely get powerful items like the POW Block in 10th, the Lightning in 14th, and the Bullet Bill in 16th). 18 Bikes and 18 Karts return from Mario Kart Wii, 6 ATVs return from Mario Kart 8 and its port (though the standard one is separated into 3 separate vehicles for each size class), as well as 10 new ATVs, and 18 hovercrafts.

Items[]

As with all Mario Kart games, Insanity allows players to use items to meet their first place goal. Some new items have been included, such as the Paratroopa Shell. New to this game is the ability to customize items in many different ways. Although the Triple Banana doesn't return, the Banana Bunch does.

Name Image Function Place Received
Item Box Item Boxes are found in groups, providing players with a random item based on their place in the race. Lower ranks give more powerful items, and vice versa. 1-16
Double Item Box Like normal Item Boxes, Double Item Boxes give items. However, as the name implies, it gives two items instead of one. 1-16
Super Horn The Super Horn can be used to block incoming projectiles, including the elusive Spiny Shell, which could not be blocked in any previous game. 1-4
Blooper Bloopers shoot ink on all the players ahead of whoever used it, obstructing vision. It also makes the affected players lose control of their kart for a few seconds. While it disappears after a few seconds, it can be removed early with a Mushroom, going underwater, or using a boost pad. 4-10
Bob-omb Bob-ombs can be thrown similarly to shells, but cause a large explosion that will toss vehicles into the air and make the affected players lose or drop their items. 3-8
Super Leaf Gives your kart a tail that can be used to deflect items and knock over opponents. It is helpful to grab out of reach Coins. This item returns from Mario Kart 7. Only Baby Peach can use this item. 1-4
Banana Bananas can be dropped on the course and will make any racers who run into it spin out. 1-4
Banana Bunch Five Bananas line up behind the kart. They can be dropped one by one. This item returns from Mario Kart 64. 3-7
Green Shell Green Shells can be shot along the track and can bounce on the walls until it hits a racer. 1-4
Triple Green Shells Similarly to Banana Bunches, three Green Shells line up behind the kart and can be used one by one. Only Koopa Troopa can use this item. 3-7
Mushroom Mushrooms give players speed boosts that can be used to cross off-road terrain. 2-4
Triple Mushrooms Three Mushrooms can be used one by one, for three speed boosts. Three Mushrooms are given automatically in time trials. 6-12
Red Shell Red Shells act like Green Shells but home in on opponents, and are destroyed if they hit walls. 2-5
Triple Red Shells Just like Triple Green Shells, but with Red Shells instead. Only Dry Bones can use this item. 4-8
Star Stars allow players to be invincible, travel off-road without losing speed, and run through racers without any impairment at all for a short time. Racers that are hit will lose all items in their possession. 9-16
Golden Mushroom Golden Mushrooms give players unlimited speed boosts for a few seconds. 8-16
Lightning Lightning strikes all other racers when it is used, making them shrink and lose speed. The racers in lower positions are first to return to normal, while higher-ranked ones are the last. You can only avoid this item if you use a cannon, a Starman, or a Bullet Bill. If this item stirkes a Mega Mushroom racer, it will revert him or her to normal. 12-16
Spiny Shell Returning to its winged form, the Spiny Shell travels in the air to the racer in first place. Once it finds its target, the Spiny Shell will circle above him and dive onto him, blasting him into the air with a huge explosion. It can be avoided using a Super Horn, Starman, Chain Chomp, Bullet Bill, or Mega Mushroom. 4-10
Paratroopa Shell
New Item
The Paratroopa Shell acts like the Spiny Shell from Double Dash to Wii, except it homes in on the nearest player and can be dragged behind the racer. It tosses the unfortunate victim into the air. It can be avoided using a Super Horn, Mushroom, Starman, Chain Chomp, Bullet Bill, or Mega Mushroom. Only Paratroopa can use this item. 3-7
Bullet Bill The Bullet Bill allows racers to become a giant Bullet Bill, giving them effects similar to that of a Star, but they are automatically steered at a high speed. Players can slightly influence the Bullet Bill's trajectory by moving left and right, allowing them to swerve into other players. Any racer that gets hit will flip over twice and lose his or her items. 10-16
Phantom Item Box
New Item
This item looks like its predecessor, but its color is closer to replicating the Item Box. It causes any opponents to flip over once hit and steals their item. It will give the stolen item to the one who dropped it. The item becomes more invisible the closer the player gets to it. It can also be held behind the player's vehicle to block attacks from shells and other vehicles. 1-5
Triple Phantom Item Box
New Item
Three Phantom Item Boxes line up behind the kart. They can be dropped one by one. 2-6
Mega Mushroom Temporarily increases the size and speed of the player, flattening any other racers they come in contact with. Protects players from every item except for Lightning, Starman racers, POW BlocksChain Chomps, Bowser Shells, and Bullet Bills. This item returns from Mario Kart Wii. Only Wario can use this item. 6-10
POW Block When a player uses this item, a POW Block icon appears above the karts and flips over all racers ahead of the user similar to a Green Shell, except it stuns them for 5 seconds. Afterward, it takes those racers an additional 7 seconds to recover. The POW Block also destroys parts of the track each time the third strike goes off. You can only avoid this item if you use a cannon, a Starman, or a Bullet Bill. It does not affect hovercrafts while they are in the water. This item returns from Mario Kart Wii. Only Waluigi can use this item. 7-12
Thunder Cloud When received, spawns a thundercloud above the player, which, causes them to gain more speed, but after 10 seconds, will strike them with lightning and shrink them. If the player bumps into another racer, then the Thundercloud will be transferred to them. Unlike every other item, the Cloud activates itself automatically. This item returns from Mario Kart Wii. Only Baby Daisy can use this item. 4-9
Bowser Shell The Bowser Shell is similar to a Green Shell in that when it is released; it will bounce around the track. However, it will not disappear after it hits an unlucky, vulnerable pair of racers. After this weapon hits the walls of a course roughly ten times or hits opponents who have invincibility, it will break apart. This item returns from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Only Bowser and Bowser Jr. can use this item. 6-14
Giant Banana The Giant Banana is similar to a Banana. However, it is much bigger and will block every item except for Spiny Shells. It will turn into a Banana Bunch for the player to use once he or she hits it. This item returns from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Only Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can use this item. 4-8
Fireball The Fireball allows the player to shoot five fireballs at once. The fireballs make players spin out and can be deadly weapons in close races. This item returns from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Only Mario and Luigi can use this item, and the latter has Green Fireballs. 5-10
Yoshi Egg The Yoshi Egg is similar to a Red Shell in that when it is released; it will home in on the nearest kart. However, it will drop random items onto the track once it hits the player ahead of the user. This item returns from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Only Yoshi can use this item, but Birdo has his own version called the Birdo Egg. 2-5
Chain Chomp The Chain Chomp acts similar to the Bullet Bill, except the user will be disconnected from it when he or she is hit by any items. This item returns from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Only Baby Mario and Baby Luigi can use this item. 12-16
Heart When used, two hearts line up behind the kart, absorbing the impact of any item that collides with the kart. This item returns from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Only Peach can use this item, but Daisy has her own version called the Flower. 2-6
Poison Mushroom Decreases the speed of the driver who hits it to 50%. Can be held behind the player to block items. This item returns from Super Mario Kart. Only Toadette can use this item. 1-6
Triple Poison Mushroom
New Item

Fan
New Item
Players can swing the Fan to deflect items behind them. They can also use it to flip over other players and make them drop their items. 6-12
Gold Banana
New Item
Acts like the Banana, except it tremendously slows down the vehicle and causes the player to lose his or her items. Players can avoid this item by pressing the tricks button as soon as they hit it. Only Sumo Kong and Ninja Kong can use this item. 1-5
Gold Banana Bunch
New Item
Five Gold Bananas line up behind the kart. They can be used one by one. Only Dread Kong and Karate Kong can use this item. 1-6
Gold Shell

Ztar
New Item
Similar to the Star, except it leaves a poisonous trail that flips over players that touch it. Only Funky Kong can use this item. 5-10
