Springing Water Spouts

A Lucky Lakitu approaches two Waterspouts in Dino Dino Jungle. His newfound luck, will allow him to make it through with ZERO problems.

A Waterspout (also called a Water Jet or a Water Geyser) is a gimmick in the Mario Kart franchise. Waterspouts make their first appearance as hazards in Dino Dino Jungle from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. They act very similarly to Lava Plumes only (surprisingly) far more hazardous. They will occasionally burst from the grounds in the cave and near the track's end flipping any players foolish enough to make contact with them. Their flip can be just as devastating as the flip from explosions caused by Items such as the Bob-omb and the ever-feared Spiny Shell. The Waterspouts also spring out of the ground in a certain pattern. The ones in the cave spring out at random while the ones outside will spring out with the two on the left and right and then the two middle ones.

The Waterspouts return in the Mario Kart 7 remake of Dino Dino Jungle. In this game, they behave the same as they did in the original but players can now preform Tricks off the mounds formed by the Waterspout eruptions. They can still flip players high into the air (being the only hazard in this game that can still do that as explosions now tumble players to the sides).

In Mario Kart Tour, waterspouts return with a helpful function, now allowing a Jump Boost. They once appear in Dino Dino Jungle and can now be seen in the regular versions of New York Minute (all four routes), RMX Vanilla Lake 1, Singapore Speedway 2, and Yoshi's Island. the trick versions of Bangkok Rush 1 & 3, Snow Land, and Wario Shipyard and the reverse-trick versions of Yoshi Desert, Coconut Mall, Singapore Speedway 3, RMX Donut Plains 1, and Rome Avanti 3. In Singapore Speedway 2 and the reverse-trick versions of Singapore Speedway 3 and Rome Avanti 3, they appear with rainbow patterns akin to musical fountains, while in all four routes of New York Minute and the trick version of Bangkok Rush 3, they burst out of manholes.

While waterspouts were absent the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8, they return in the Switch version with the same function as in Mario Kart Tour, being found in New York Minute, Singapore Speedway, and Yoshi's Island. In New York Minute, the waterspouts had their height lowered.

Trivia![]

  • Although Waterspouts are hazards in Mario Kart games prior to Mario Kart Tour, in the main Mario games and even the Donkey Kong games, they are rather useful as they spring Mario and friends higher into the air allowing them to reach higher ledges and gain extra height.
